The Atlantic Council in Washington, D.C., hosted H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, for a dialogue session entitled “Iraq After 30 September.” The session was moderated by Ms Victoria Taylor, Director of the Iraq Initiative and Syria Project at the Atlantic Council.
The discussion addressed the latest political and security developments in Iraq and the region, prospects for Iraqi-American relations, the future of security cooperation, and efforts to combat the terrorist organisation Daesh. It also discussed Iraq’s position on regional conflicts, the repercussions of sanctions imposed on Iran for Iraq and its economic relations, as well as the Iraqi Government’s efforts to place weapons under the control of the state and address the issue of armed factions.
In this context, the Minister explained that the Iraqi Government had prepared a draft plan to place weapons under the control of the state, which is scheduled to be presented in the coming days and will include specific timelines for its implementation, noting that the Prime Minister had announced that the deadline for completing the plan would be June of next year.
The discussion also addressed border security and developments in Syria and their implications for Iraq’s national security, in addition to exploring opportunities to strengthen economic relations between Iraq and the United States and encourage American companies to invest in Iraq, thereby contributing to expanding prospects for economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.
