H.E. Nazar Al-Khirullah, met with Republican Senator from Montana, Mr. Tim Sheehy, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the importance of advancing the military and security partnership between Iraq and the United States, and of working toward mutual understandings to define priorities for the next phase of military cooperation following the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, in a manner that serves the interests of both countries. They also stressed the importance of providing appropriate support to the Iraqi Army and military institutions, considering this a key factor in strengthening Iraq’s stability.
Ambassador Al-Khirullah noted that Iraq represents a central pillar in combating Daesh and terrorism in the region, drawing on its long experience, accumulated expertise, and extensive knowledge in this field. Iraqi people, as a result of the open war they fought against terrorism over the past twenty years and the significant sacrifices they made, are among the peoples most aware of and motivated to confront terrorism.
For his part, Senator Tim Sheehy expressed his interest in Iraq, noting the progress the country has achieved compared to the years when he served in Iraq as part of the U.S. Army. He expressed his expectation that Iraq would continue to advance on the path of stability and democracy.
Senator Sheehy also reaffirmed his support for strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries, pointing to important opportunities for expanding cooperation and expressing his hope to visit Iraq in the near future.
