H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, met on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, with U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin, at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., to discuss Iraqi-American relations and ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the security and economic fields.

The meeting addressed prospects for developing security cooperation between the two countries and moving it towards a preventive approach, as well as supporting training programmes for the Iraqi armed forces and strengthening the capabilities of security institutions.

The two sides also discussed the importance of supporting the Iraqi Government’s efforts to uphold the rule of law and place weapons under the control of the state, in a manner that contributes to enhancing security and stability in Iraq.

The two sides also discussed the issue of the terrorist ISIS detainees transferred from Syria to Iraq and the importance of strengthening international cooperation in addressing this issue, including facilitating the repatriation of nationals of the countries concerned. They also stressed the importance of continued coordination between the Iraqi Government and the U.S. Congress regarding security support and training programmes and institutional capacity-building.

On the economic front, the meeting discussed investment opportunities in Iraq and the importance of establishing long-term economic partnerships, as well as benefiting from the expertise of the Iraqi community in the United States, particularly in the State of Michigan, in a manner that contributes to supporting development efforts and strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.
