On October 2, 2013, Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki met with Iraqi business leaders and traders from the National Business Council.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need for the private sector to play a much greater role in rebuilding Iraq, with an emphasis on the electricity, oil and agricultural sectors.
PM Al-Maliki said that legal and legislative reforms alone were not sufficient to transform Iraq’s centralized economy – one which has an overreliance on the public sector – to a market economy. Further, he reiterated that a change in cultural attitudes and practices was essential.
Members of the National Business Council offered the Prime Minister an overview of the increasingly active role of the private sector in Iraq’s industrial sectors, adding that significant milestones had been reached in achieving this goal.
