The Government of Iraq has made significant strides against Daesh. Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi has pursued an ambitious reform agenda to rebuild Iraq’s military capabilities, root out corruption, and pave the way for displaced persons to return to their homes.

On August 19, we recall the painful blast that targeted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Baghdad. This anniversary reaffirms our unity in confronting terrorism and extremism. He discussed the ongoing situation in Anbar and disputed the prevailing sectarian narrative, noting the Iraqi government's "evenhanded" approach to tackling extremist groups throughout the country.

Ambassador Faily stressed that Iraq and the United States were cooperating at the highest levels to ensure that Iraq is equipped to fight Al-Qaeda militants. He highlighted aspects of the strategic partnership including cooperation on counter-terrorism and technology-transfer.

Into the Presidential Palace in Baghdad today, holding a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, President Salih stressed the importance of continuous coordination and joint work which would avert Iraq and the region the conflicts and the war. We don't want our territory to be a staging post for any hostile action against any of our neighbors, or be as a battleground for a proxy-war, he added.
