Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi received U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on September 10, 2014 in Baghdad. The leaders discussed the political and security situation in Iraq and the region and the bilateral relationship between Iraq and the United States.
Prime Minister al-Abadi and Secretary Kerry also discussed the establishment of an international coalition to counter the threat of the so-called Islamic State. Prime Minister al-Abadi welcomed all international efforts and assistance in Iraq’s fight against these terrorists.
Secretary Kerry reiterated the U.S. support for Iraq and the formation of its new government, stressing that the United States stands ready to provide assistance to help Iraq to stabilize the situation on the ground.
Secretary Kerry also congratulated PM al-Abadi on the formation of his new cabinet and said the United States administration looks forward to working closely with the new inclusive government.
