Iraq recently decreed its first official national park, after years of planning and bargaining within its governmental council. The new title will help protect the central marshes of Iraq and marks a positive step forward for the country's environmental future.
The Iraqi Ministries of Water Resources and Environment, the National Park Committee and other environmental groups played an integral part in passing the legislation to name the national park, which means a lot more for Iraq than just recreational uses associated with parks in the United States and Europe.
The park will protect Iraqi marshlands, associated as the “the cradle of civilization,” as Iraq is believed to be the birthplace of agriculture, writing, monotheism, the wheel, and countless other human developments.
